How to make a Roblox bow and arrow (with AI)

By Sametcan Tasgiran, Founder & Developer·Published ·Updated

A Roblox bow and arrow needs five pieces: draw-back charge, projectile physics with gravity, damage with falloff, headshot detection, and arrow recovery. Describe your bow and Picoo writes the scripts for it. The build below is one example of that output.

Example build: 6 files · 190 lines. Picoo writes this code for each prompt, so file names and line counts vary from run to run. Arrows are spawned, and their hits decided, on the server.

Draw-back charge

Hold the mouse to draw and release to fire. Damage scales from 25% with no draw to 100% at full draw (1.5 seconds), and arrow speed rises with the charge.

Projectile physics

The server spawns the arrow as a Part and launches it with an initial velocity, so gravity bends it into an arc. Base speed is set per bow (150 studs/sec in this example).

Damage falloff

Damage drops 10% per 50 studs traveled, down to 60% at the 200-stud max range. The arrow despawns at max range or on hit.

Headshot detection

If the part the arrow hits is named Head, damage doubles.

Arrow recovery

An arrow that hits a wall or tree sticks there for 30 seconds. A ProximityPrompt on it lets a player pick it up for +1 arrow.

Quiver UI

A counter in the corner shows the arrows left. The bow cannot fire when the quiver is empty; recovered arrows go back into it.

Example output from a build like this

6 files in this example. Picoo writes this code for your prompt, so file names and sizes vary.

Building a Roblox bow and arrow

Bow and arrow systems are where Roblox's physics engine shines for ranged combat. The defining mark of a good bow: aim feels precise, charging feels rewarding, hits feel earned. The example below covers all three.

In this example Picoo wrote six files. The draw-back charge is the core feel: hold the mouse to draw, release to fire. Damage scales linearly from 25% (no draw, instant fire) to 100% (full draw at 1.5 seconds), which rewards patient aim and adds a real skill ceiling.

The arrow is a Part launched with an initial velocity, so gravity curves it downward over distance, and hitting a moving target takes lead and elevation. Arrow speed is set per bow (150 studs/sec in this example): fast bows are easier to aim, slow bows arc harder.

Damage falloff makes range matter. The arrow's damage drops 10% per 50 studs traveled, so at the 200-stud max range it deals 60% of base damage. That keeps a long-range bow from dominating at every distance. Both numbers are per-bow settings in BowConfig.

Headshots are the precision reward: if the part the arrow hits is named Head, damage doubles. To mark headshots in a killfeed, ask for it in a follow-up prompt.

Arrow recovery is the resource loop. Arrows are not infinite: the quiver holds 20 in this example. Arrows that hit walls or trees stick for 30 seconds and can be picked up again; arrows that hit players are lost. Players manage their ammo and retrieve arrows when it is safe.

Frequently asked

How is the arrow's hit detection server-authoritative?+

In this example ArrowManager spawns the arrow on the server, and the server decides what it hit and how much damage to apply. The client sends only the charge level and aim direction, and the server rejects a charge outside 0 to 1.

Can players juke the arrow mid-flight?+

Yes. The arrow takes time to travel and drops as it goes, so a sidestep can dodge it. A fuller draw fires a faster arrow, which is harder to dodge.

Can I add explosive arrows or multi-shot?+

Yes, in a follow-up prompt. For explosive arrows, ask for area damage on impact, for example every Humanoid within a few studs found with GetPartBoundsInRadius. For multi-shot, ask for several arrows fired in a spread, with damage per arrow lowered to keep the total balanced.

How does arrow recovery work?+

In this example an arrow that hits something other than a player welds itself to the part it hit and stays for 30 seconds. A ProximityPrompt on it gives the player who picks it up +1 arrow. Arrows that hit players are lost.

Does Picoo have a recipe for ranged weapons?+

Yes, projectile_weapon. In its bolt mode it builds a Tool in StarterPack whose server script launches a glowing projectile that damages the first Humanoid it touches (35 by default), after checking that the player is holding the tool, is within the fire rate, and fired from within 18 studs of their character. Draw-back charge, falloff, headshots and a quiver are extra code on top of it.
