How to make a Roblox fishing game (with AI)

By Sametcan Tasgiran, Founder & Developer·Published ·Updated

A Roblox fishing game needs five pieces: cast mechanics, bite RNG, a reel mini-game, rarity tiers, and inventory integration. Describe your fishing game and Picoo writes the scripts for it. The build below is one example of that output.

Example build: 6 files · 220 lines. Picoo writes this code for each prompt, so file names and line counts vary from run to run. This one has 4 rarity tiers and a fish pool you edit in one config file.

Cast mechanics

Click and hold to charge the cast distance, then release. The bobber lands based on charge time and aim direction.

Bite RNG

After a cast, the server waits a random 3 to 15 seconds for a bite. The bobber shakes when a fish bites, and the player has 1 second to react.

Reel mini-game

Hold the mouse to reel. A tension bar fills: too much tension breaks the line, too little lets the fish escape, and the sweet spot is in the middle. Rarer fish take longer to land.

Rarity tiers

Common (60%), Uncommon (25%), Rare (10%), Legendary (5%). Each tier has its own fish and sell prices.

Inventory integration

On a catch, the fish is added to the player's inventory, stacked per fish type. If your game already has an inventory script, name it in the prompt so the catch goes there.

Per-location fish pools

FishConfig groups fish by location: river, lake and ocean. The excerpt draws from the lake pool; ask for tagged water parts to switch pools by where the bobber lands.

Example output from a build like this

6 files in this example. Picoo writes this code for your prompt, so file names and sizes vary.

ServerScriptService/FishingManager.lua

Cast validation, bite timing, catch resolution

ServerScriptService/ReelMinigame.lua

Tension calculation, fish escape/catch logic

ReplicatedStorage/Modules/FishConfig.lua

Per-fish stats, rarity, sell price, location

ReplicatedStorage/Remotes/CastBobber

Client cast → server

ReplicatedStorage/Remotes/ReelTick

Reel input stream

StarterGui/FishingUI.lua

Tension bar, fish info popup on catch

Building a Roblox fishing game

Fishing games are a quietly popular Roblox genre. The pattern that makes fishing addictive: a predictable cast, a suspenseful wait, a reactive bite, a skill-tested reel, and a variable reward. Here is one example of what Picoo writes for it.

In this example Picoo wrote six files. FishConfig.lua holds the fish pool: 12 starter fish across 3 locations and 4 rarity tiers, so adding a fish is adding a row. FishingManager.lua handles cast tracking, bite timing, and catch resolution. ReelMinigame.lua runs the tension-based reel, where most of the skill lives.

Cast mechanics are the entry point. Click and hold to charge: the longer the hold, the farther the cast, up to a set maximum. Release to fling the bobber, which lands based on charge and aim. Players quickly learn the timing and start placing bobbers precisely.

Bite RNG is the suspense layer. After the cast, the server picks a random wait of 3 to 15 seconds. The bobber sits still until a fish bites, then shakes, and the player has 1 second to react; miss it and they recast. It keeps players engaged without constant input.

The reel mini-game is where the skill ceiling lives. Hold to reel; the tension bar fills based on reel speed and the fish's struggle. Too much tension breaks the line; too little lets the fish escape. Rare fish struggle harder and need more precise control, so players who master the timing land more rare fish.

The rarity tiers drive the long-term grind: 60% common, 25% uncommon, 10% rare, 5% legendary. Common fish sell cheap and legendary fish sell big. Each location has its own pool, so different waters feel different and exploring pays off. Rod upgrades that shift the odds are a natural follow-up prompt.

Frequently asked

How do I add a new fish?+

Add an entry to FishConfig.lua: id, displayName, rarity (string), price (cash), location (lake/river/ocean), reelDifficulty (1-5). FishingManager picks it up automatically.

Can players use better rods to catch better fish?+

Ask for rod tiers in a follow-up prompt. A common design gives each rod a rarityBoost value that shifts the odds, so a legendary rod might raise the legendary chance from 5% to 15%.

How does the location pool work?+

FishConfig.byLocation maps location names to fish pools. The excerpt above always uses 'lake'. To switch pools by location, give your water parts a Location attribute and have the cast handler read it from the part under the bobber; ask for it in your prompt.

What about a fishing competition mode?+

Easy extension: track per-player total catch value over a fixed window (30 minutes). Highest score wins. Picoo can generate the competition controller in a follow-up prompt.

How are caught fish sold?+

Ask for a sell step in a follow-up prompt, for example a sell pad or a shop NPC that turns the fish in a player's inventory into cash. If your game already has inventory and currency scripts, name them so the new code uses them.
